This excerpt is from book “The Book of Negroes” by Lawrence Hill. This book tells us the story of Aminata Diallo. Abducted from Africa as a child and enslaved in South Carolina, Aminata thinks only of freedom. Sold to an indigo trader who recognises her intelligence, Aminata is torn from her family and thrown into the chaos of the Revolutionary War.

Here, we see Aminata introducing herself to a fellow kidnapped slave who very much reminds her of her father.
